Reviews: Crown Range Cellar 2015 Grant Taylor Pinot Noir, Central Otago★★★★★
"Even ruby-red colour with youthful purple hues, lighter on the edge. This has a full and finely fragrant nose with ethereal layers of ripe, dark red berry fruits entwined with dark herbs, whole bunch stalk complexities, dark red florals and minerally reductive detail that unfold in waves. Medium-full bodied, juicy, fleshy and succulent flavours of ripe, dark-red berry fruit are entwined with complex dark thyme herb and savoury whole bunch stalk notes, and background undergrowth elements. The sweet fruit is supported by fine-grained, flowery tannins providing a supple, balanced structure and grip. Bright, lively acidity adds to the palate vitality and fruit richness, and the wine carries to a long and lingering finish with an array of fruit and complexing herb and stalk detail. This is a succulently fleshy Pinot Noir with complex flavours of dark red fruits, herbs, stalks and undergrowth notes, on a fresh, fine-textured palate. Match with wild duck and pork, and with coq au vin over the next 6-7+ years. Clones 5, 6, 115, 113, 114 and 777 from Gibbston, fermentation initiated with indigenous yeasts and fermented to 13.5% alc. with 33% whole bunches, the wine aged 11 months in 33% new oak. 100 dozen made.
“An exceptional offering from one of the most highly respected winemaker, Grant Taylor, this is symphonic and compelling. Engaging aromas of dark berry, smoked meat, clove and truffle with nuances of cedar and vanilla on the nose. The palate exhibits awesome power and concentration, while remaining poised and structured. The wine offers outstanding fruit richness, beautifully enhanced by velvety texture and fine tannins, leading to a sumptuous, seductive finish. At its best: now to 2025.”
