Some of the best ideas are hatched over a glass of wine.
And it’s exactly how Crown Range Cellar was born.

Crown Range Cellar was born on the back of a napkin over a glass or two at a local Queenstown restaurant overlooking the mountain ranges. The dream was to make small volumes of award winning wine, grown in a variety of famous wine regions throughout New Zealand.

Most well known for our Pinot Noir, it all started with our flagship wine – the Signature Selection Pinot Noir from Gibbston – made by master winemaker Grant Taylor.  Having perfected his craft in Burgundy and the Napa Valley, Grant returned to his native Otago in 1993 and was one of the pioneers of Gibbston Valley Pinot Noir. 36 years in the making, the Signature Selection Pinot Noir is a celebration of Grant's craft and his deep connection with Central Otago.

After three years experimenting with different parcels of land, winemaking techniques and after plenty of mistakes, we finally felt ready to show the wine to the world. In 2015 we entered the International Wine and Spirits Competition in London for the first time and that year we won the Trophy for Best Pinot Noir, competing against thousands of wine entries from 90 different countries.

Every year since then we have collaborated with top wine makers to produce limited volumes of these exclusive wines. The latest collaboration is with Patrick Léon, the world famous winemaker who worked with Baron Phillipe de Rothschild from 1985 until 2000. Today he is making a limited run of Syrah for Crown Range Cellar.

Our most exciting new development is our range of deep reds – The Stolen Heart collection. Incorporating Merlot Malbec, Cabernet Merlot and Syrah from organic fruit grown in the Gimblett Gravels. The range is seductive, dark and mysterious. The Stolen Heart story has been told in a recent short film which took place in New York, featuring Art Green and Matilda Rice. Styled by designer Nicole Miller, the piece tells the story of a love that was so wrong, but felt so right.

Crown Range Cellar now has a range of wines in different styles to suit different tastes and moods. Each wine is creatively presented alongside matching photography, video and music telling unique stories designed to trigger memories, emotions and personal experiences that make drinking them an intimate experience.

Our hard work was rewarded when our Signature Selection Grant Taylor Pinot Noir 2013 received the IWSC Trophy for best Pinot in 2015
