Studio 125 in conjunction with Scape Public Art, is a pop-up art gallery in the heart of Christchurch’s Merivale district. Each week the studio is opened to the public to host different functions, from Kids N’ Art, Coffee N’ Art to Wine N’ Art. Naturally, Crown Range Cellar was invited to run the Wine N’ Art session. It was a great evening and a fabulous event for us to show off our expertise in crafting multi-sensory experiences.

China Girl is our symbol of going forward, with it’s chalky and earthy characteristics it has been awarded 5 starts from Simon Nash, Raymond Chan and Wine Orbit. Most special to us and what sparked our collaborative vision with Sir Michael Hill is the one lingering fact that the vines holding these China Girl grapes held deep roots in soil once rich in gold, in soil that so many suffered for. We are lucky, in fact honoured to have the opportunity and vision to nurture this land and product our very own liquid gold...where else is the world can this be achieved?

I was young, excited and deeply affected by my new found interest and used a canvas to pay my respects. I got top marks for my project and 16 years later I have combined what I learned, my passion for wine and a lifelong love for David Bowie and his ‘China Girl’ to produce my very own homage to those iron-hearted ancestors.

The story of our China Girl Pinot Noir begins in 1869 in Central Otago, New Zealand. Over 2000 Chinese miners came to a land they called the “New Gold Mountain” in a region known for its harsh conditions. Leading now impoverished lives, these miners settled in a goldfield that would become one our countries richest mines.
