Deep garnet hue with enticing aromas of plum, dark cherry, cardamom and mocha. Blackberry, bittersweet chocolate and baking spice on the palate with pronounced yet velvety tannins and a beautiful backbone of acidity. Robust and full of character, it reflects the distinctive landscape of Chinaman's Terrace in Bendigo - a place full of gold mining history and now a burgeoning grape growing region.
With the discovery of gold in Central Otago New Zealand, by 1869 over 2,000 Chinese miners had come to a land they called the ‘New Gold Mountain’. In a region known for its harsh conditions, these miners lived impoverished lives in a goldfield settlement that became one of our country’s richest mines. China Girl Pinot Noir was created to honour the hardworking spirit of the Chinese miners of this great region. Aromatic Pinot Noir with dark fruit aromas. More defined on the palate with plum, black cherry, liquorice, wood smoke and a hint of spice, coffee and dark chocolate. Reasonably dense with fine, powdery tannins. A very typical wine from the Bendigo sub-region.
“Very dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour with some purple on the rim. The nose is full and voluminous with plenty of aromatic presence, showing stylishly restrained, ripe, black-red berry and cherry fruits intermingling with plum, liquorice, iron-earth, tar and mineral notes, that build with good density in the glass. Full-bodied, the palate is firmly packed and concentrated with sweetly ripe black berried fruits, along with liquorice, oak, iron-earth and mineral elements. This has a deep core with plenty of fine-grained, powdery tannin extraction providing structure, the acidity integrated and soft. The wine has density and linearity, carrying to a long, black-fruited, minerally finish. This is a concentrated, ripe, black-fruited Pinot Noir with fine, firm structure and linearity. Serve with lamb, beef, venison and semi-hard cheeses over the next 7-9 years. Fruit predominantly from ‘Chinaman’s Terrace’, Bendigo, fermentation initiated with indigenous yeasts and fermented to 13.5% alc. with 30% whole bunches, the wine aged 11 months in 34% new oak. ”
“From Chinaman's Terrace in the Bendigo Hill district, this is a wonderfully composed and impressively complex pinot noir. The bouquet shows dark cherry, mixed spice, cedar and floral characters with a hint of vanilla lift. The palate is concentrated and velvety, and delivers gorgeous fruit richness backed by polished tannins. The wine is delectable and engaging, and offers terrific drinking. At its best: now to 2020.”
